Federal Office of PoliceGovernment
Switzerland
What it is
The Federal Office of Police, commonly known as fedpol, is Switzerland's national police agency operating under the Federal Department of Justice and Police. While primary policing authority remains with the Swiss cantons, fedpol investigates complex crimes under federal jurisdiction—such as organized crime, terrorism, and money laundering—and manages national criminal databases while coordinating domestic and international law enforcement through INTERPOL and Europol. After evolving from early 20th-century coordination bureaus and undergoing significant reform following the 1989 'Secret Files' scandal, the agency was formally restructured in 2001 to house the newly established Federal Criminal Police.
