Switzerland · founded 1848
What it is
The Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland is the supreme judicial authority and highest court of appeal in the Swiss Confederation. Headquartered primarily in Lausanne, its mandate is to ensure the uniform application of federal law and protect constitutional rights across cantons. Established under the 1848 Federal Constitution as an ad hoc body, it was reformed into a permanent court in 1874 and seated in French-speaking Switzerland to maintain regional balance and judicial independence from the federal government in Bern.
