What it is
The Switzerland–EU Joint Committee is a bilateral body established to manage, supervise, and ensure the proper implementation of agreements between Switzerland and the European Union. Operating primarily under sectoral agreements, its mandate includes resolving trade or regulatory disputes, updating technical provisions, and facilitating mutual market access. The original and foundational Joint Committee was established following the 1972 Free Trade Agreement between Switzerland and the European Economic Community, which entered into force in 1973. The joint committee mechanism significantly expanded following the signing of the Bilateral Agreements I in 1999 to cover key sectors such as the free movement of persons, air transport, and agriculture.
