What it is

The Council of Forensic Medicine (Adli Tıp Kurumu - ATK) is the official forensic medicine and scientific expertise institution in Turkey, operating under the Ministry of Justice. Its primary mandate is to provide independent medical and scientific expert witness opinions, autopsies, toxicological analyses, and forensic reports required by courts and public prosecutor offices in civil and criminal proceedings. Tracing its legal roots to the establishment of the Institute and Council of Legal Medicine (Tıbb-ı Adli Müessesesi) under the Ottoman Ministry of Justice in 1917, the organization was reorganized into its modern specialized institutional structure under Law No. 2659 in 1982.
