General Directorate of CustomsGovernment

Albania · founded 1992

What it is

The General Directorate of Customs (Drejtoria e Përgjithshme e Doganave - DPD) is the national customs authority of the Republic of Albania, subordinate to the Ministry of Finance. Its mandate is to facilitate international trade, assess and collect customs duties, excise taxes, and import tariffs, protect economic borders, and prevent the smuggling of illicit goods, narcotics, and counterfeit products. While modern Albanian customs administration traces its origins to the provisional government established following the 1912 declaration of national independence, the contemporary directorate was reconstituted in 1992 to facilitate transition toward a market economy and align cross-border trade procedures with European Union standards.
