General Directorate of Prisonsgovernment

Albania · founded 1998

What it is

The General Directorate of Prisons (Drejtoria e Përgjithshme e Burgjeve) is an executive agency operating under Albania's Ministry of Justice. It is mandated to administer the national penitentiary system, ensuring prison security as well as the humane treatment, living conditions, and rehabilitation of convicted offenders and pre-trial detainees. Historically managed under the Ministry of Internal Affairs during the communist regime, the prison system transitioned to civilian administration following democratic reforms. The modern directorate was formally established in 1998 following major legislative overhauls aligned with Council of Europe human rights standards.
