What it is
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Albania is a central government department responsible for national security, public order, civil status, and the protection of citizens' rights and freedoms. It oversees key agencies, most notably the Albanian State Police and regional prefectures. Established on December 4, 1912, shortly after Albania declared independence, it was one of the foundational ministries created under Ismail Qemali's provisional government. During the communist era, the ministry wielded extensive authority over domestic security and state surveillance before being modernized in the post-communist democratic transition.
