What it is
The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, officially known as the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, is the cabinet ministry responsible for Austria's foreign policy and international diplomacy. Headquartered in Vienna, it is tasked with representing Austrian interests globally, managing relations within the European Union and international bodies, and providing consular assistance to Austrian citizens abroad. Established in its modern republican form in 1920 following the collapse of Austria-Hungary, the ministry later played a critical role in negotiating the 1955 Austrian State Treaty, which restored national sovereignty and enshrined Austria's permanent neutrality.
