What it is
The Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs (BMEIA) is the cabinet-level ministry responsible for conducting Austria's foreign policy, diplomatic relations, and European integration efforts. It manages the country's network of embassies and consulates while representing Austrian interests in international organizations such as the United Nations and the European Union. While Austrian diplomacy traces its institutional lineage back to 1720 under the Habsburg monarchy, the dedicated modern foreign ministry was formally reconstituted in 1959 following the 1955 Austrian State Treaty.
