What it is

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Belarus is a central government body responsible for domestic security, law enforcement, and crime prevention. Its mandate includes overseeing the national police (militsiya), internal troops, traffic regulation, and migration control. While its institutional roots trace back to the creation of the Belarusian militia in 1917, the modern ministry was officially established in 1991 during the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
