What it is
The President of the Republic of Belarus is the head of state and the supreme representative of executive power in Belarus, responsible for safeguarding state sovereignty, national security, and territorial integrity. The post was established in 1994 following the adoption of the post-Soviet Constitution, replacing the Chairman of the Supreme Council as the nation's leader. Alexander Lukashenko won the inaugural election that same year and has held the office continuously since, significantly consolidating executive authority through constitutional referendums in 1996 and 2004.
