What it is

The Belgian Navy, officially known as the Marine Component of the Belgian Armed Forces, is Belgium's maritime defense service. Its mandate centers on securing national waters and coastal infrastructure, defending sea lanes of communication, and contributing specialized capabilities—most notably in mine countermeasures—to NATO and international missions. Originally established in 1831 by King Leopold I before being disbanded in 1862, it was re-established after World War II in 1946 and integrated operational naval command with the Royal Netherlands Navy under the binational Admiral Benelux agreement in 1996.
