What it is

The United Nations presence in Cyprus primarily comprises the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) alongside the Secretary-General's Good Offices mission. Its mandate is to prevent renewed conflict, patrol the United Nations Buffer Zone, maintain the ceasefire status quo, and facilitate diplomatic negotiations aimed at achieving a comprehensive political settlement. Deployed under Security Council Resolution 186 in March 1964 following intercommunal fighting, its role was significantly adapted following the 1974 war, making it one of the longest-running peacekeeping operations in UN history.
