What it is
The Hungarian Academy of Arts is a self-governing public body that serves as a central institution representing Hungarian artistic and cultural life. Its mandate is to preserve national cultural heritage, support contemporary artistic creation, distribute state grants and awards, and advise the Hungarian parliament and government on cultural policy. Established in 1992 as a private association of artists led by organic architect Imre Makovecz, the organization was elevated to an official public body by parliament in 2011 and enshrined in Hungary's Fundamental Law in 2012, granting it substantial state funding and stewardship over major national cultural institutions.
