What it is

The Judiciary of Hungary is the independent court system responsible for administering justice, interpreting legislation, and safeguarding the rule of law across the country. Operating under a four-tier structure headed by the supreme court (the Curia), its mandate includes adjudicating civil, criminal, and administrative disputes while ensuring the uniform application of statutory law. Tracing its historical roots to the medieval royal courts and formalized through landmark judicial reforms in 1723 and 1881, the modern judicial framework was fundamentally restructured following the 1989 transition to democracy and the enactment of the 2011 Fundamental Law.
