What it is
The Office of the Prosecutor General (Legfőbb Ügyészség) is the supreme authority of Hungary's independent prosecution service, operating as an autonomous constitutional organ contributing to the administration of justice. Its primary mandate is to uphold the rule of law, supervise criminal investigations, press public charges, and represent the state's prosecution in court proceedings. Modern public prosecution in Hungary traces its origins to Act XXXIII of 1871 establishing the royal prosecution system, before being structurally reorganized into the modern centralized Office of the Prosecutor General in 1953. Following the transition to democracy in 1989, the office was separated from executive oversight to guarantee its full constitutional independence.
