What it is
The Democratic Party (Partito Democratico, PD) is a major Italian centre-left political party. Its mandate is to promote social democracy, European integration, and progressive socio-economic reforms within the Italian parliament and across regional governments. It was founded in October 2007 through the historic merger of the social-democratic Democrats of the Left (DS) and the centrist Christian-left Daisy (La Margherita), and has since led several national coalition governments under prime ministers including Enrico Letta and Matteo Renzi.
