What it is
The Ministry of Defence (Ministero della Difesa) is the executive department of the Italian government responsible for national defense and military administration. It oversees the Italian Armed Forces—comprising the Army, Navy, Air Force, and the Carabinieri in its military duties—and coordinates international defense cooperation. Established in February 1947 under the De Gasperi III Cabinet, it unified the previously separate ministries of War, Navy, and Air Force following Italy's transition to a republic, with Luigi Gasparotto serving as its first minister.
