What it is
The Ministry of Economy and Finance (Ministero dell'Economia e delle Finanze, MEF) is the executive department of the Italian government responsible for managing public finances, tax policies, economic planning, and national budget allocation. It plays a central role in supervising state spending, monitoring public debt, and overseeing state-owned enterprises. Formally established in 2001 under the Bassanini reforms, the MEF merged the previously separate Ministry of the Treasury, Budget and Economic Planning with the Ministry of Finance. Its roots trace back to the Kingdom of Sardinia's Ministry of Finance, which became one of the original departments upon Italian unification in 1861.
