What it is
The Ministry of Justice (Ministero della Giustizia) is a cabinet-level department of the Italian government responsible for the administration of judicial services, court infrastructure, and the penitentiary system. While it oversees logistics and administrative operations, the 1948 Constitution strictly preserves the independence of magistrates under the High Council of the Judiciary. Established in 1861 upon Italian unification under the government of Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, it was historically known as the Ministry of Grace and Justice until its name was officially simplified in 1999.
