What it is
The Ministry of the Interior (Ministero dell'Interno) is a cabinet-level department of the Italian government responsible for internal security, public order, civil rights, immigration, and electoral management. Operating through national police forces and a territorial network of prefectures, it oversees the protection of democratic institutions and coordinates emergency civil protection services. Established in 1861 during Italian unification, its administrative model originated in the Kingdom of Sardinia under the Cavour administration. In 1925, the ministry transferred its headquarters to the Palazzo del Viminale in Rome, which has since served as an enduring metonym for the institution.
