What it is
The Presidency of the Council of Ministers is the central administrative apparatus supporting the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers of Italy. It is responsible for coordinating general government policy, maintaining unity in political and administrative direction, and liaising between regional and European institutions. Tracing its lineage back to the establishment of the Kingdom of Italy's premiership in 1861, the institution was formally organized in its modern constitutional structure with the birth of the Italian Republic and later codified by Law 400 in 1988.
