What it is

The Presidency of the Republic is the constitutional office representing the Italian head of state and national unity. Charged with safeguarding the Italian Constitution and acting as an impartial mediator, the president appoints the prime minister, promulgates legislation, commands the armed forces, and heads the High Council of the Judiciary. The office was established following the historic June 2, 1946 institutional referendum that abolished the Italian monarchy in favor of a republic.
