What it is
The Latvian Farmers' Union (Latvijas Zemnieku savienība - LZS) is a historic agrarian, centrist political party in Latvia and a foundational member of the Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS) parliamentary alliance. Its political mandate focuses on promoting rural development, defending the interests of farmers and agricultural communities, supporting regional economies, and advocating for environmental stewardship and national sovereignty. Founded in Valka on May 12, 1917, during the tumultuous period leading to Latvian statehood, it was one of the preeminent political forces of interwar Latvia, co-founded by Kārlis Ulmanis who served as the nation's first prime minister, before being reconstituted in 1990 upon the restoration of independence.
