What it is
Latvijas dzelzceļš (Latvian Railway) is the national state-owned railway enterprise of Latvia responsible for maintaining and managing the country's public railway infrastructure as well as providing freight transport services. Originally established in 1919 as the Railway High Board following the nation's independence, the enterprise consolidated a network fragmented across multiple track gauges left by World War I. Following the restoration of Latvian sovereignty, it was formally re-established as a modern state enterprise on October 1, 1991.
