What it is
The Caisse nationale de santé (CNS, or Gesondheetskeess) is Luxembourg's primary public health insurance institution operating under the supervision of the Ministry of Social Security. It is mandated to administer compulsory health, maternity, and long-term care insurance (assurance dépendance), reimbursing healthcare costs and paying financial sickness benefits for private-sector employees, self-employed persons, and their dependents. The institution was created on January 1, 2009, through a historic reform that introduced a unified status for private-sector employees and merged six legacy professional sickness funds and the Union des caisses de maladie.
