What it is
The Electoral Commission of Malta is an independent constitutional body tasked with organizing and overseeing general, local, and European Parliament elections as well as national referenda in Malta. Its mandate includes maintaining electoral registers, reviewing electoral boundaries, and administering voting under the Single Transferable Vote system. Electoral commissioners were first established in Malta in 1849 under British colonial rule to oversee elections for the Council of Government, before being reconstituted as an autonomous constitutional authority upon Malta's independence in 1964.
