What it is
The Military Gendarmerie (Żandarmeria Wojskowa) is a specialized, independent branch of the Polish Armed Forces serving as the national military police. It is responsible for enforcing military discipline, investigating crimes involving service personnel, protecting military facilities and dignitaries, and maintaining public order in cooperation with civilian police. Tracing its historical roots to Polish military policing units dating back to the 19th-century insurrections and the Second Polish Republic, the modern service was officially re-established on September 1, 1990.
