What it is
The National Council of the Judiciary (Krajowa Rada Sądownictwa) is a constitutional body in Poland tasked with safeguarding the independence of courts and judges. Its primary mandate includes nominating candidates for judicial appointment to the President of Poland and reviewing legislation affecting the justice system. Established in December 1989 as a product of the Round Table Agreement during the democratic transition, the Council became the center of a major constitutional crisis in 2017–2018 when controversial legal reforms transferred the power to appoint its judicial members to the parliament.
