What it is
The Sejm of the Republic of Poland is the lower house of the bicameral Polish parliament, exercising supreme legislative power and overseeing the Council of Ministers. Composed of 460 deputies elected every four years, it initiates and passes legislation, approves the state budget, and holds the government accountable through votes of confidence. Tracing its origins to the first general assembly of the estates convened in Piotrków in 1493, the Sejm notably adopted Europe's first modern written constitution, the Constitution of 3 May, in 1791.
