What it is
The Senate of the Republic of Poland is the upper chamber of the bicameral Polish parliament, representing regional constituencies through 100 directly elected senators. It reviews, amends, or vetoes legislation passed by the lower chamber (the Sejm) and exercises key constitutional oversight. Tracing its origins to the Royal Council of the mid-14th century and formally established in 1493, the body was dissolved under communist rule following a fraudulent 1946 referendum before being re-established in 1989.
