What it is
The Banská Bystrica Self-Governing Region (BBSK) is a higher territorial self-governing unit located in central and southern Slovakia. It is responsible for regional development, secondary education, social care facilities, cultural institutions, and the maintenance of second- and third-class roads. Formally established in 2001 under the public administration decentralization reform, its regional assembly and administration commenced operations in 2002. The territory encompasses a historically prominent mining heartland that also served as the focal point of the 1944 Slovak National Uprising against Nazi occupation.
