What it is
The Government Delegation in the Balearic Islands is the regional organ of Spain's General State Administration that represents the central national government within the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. Its mandate includes directing and coordinating central state services across the archipelago, overseeing state law enforcement and public security, and coordinating with regional and insular authorities. Established under the framework of Article 154 of the 1978 Spanish Constitution, its first delegate was officially appointed in 1984 following the approval of the region's 1983 Statute of Autonomy. In 1997, under the LOFAGE administrative reform, it absorbed the historical Civil Governments and created island-level directorates (Direcciones Insulares) across Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera.
