What it is
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food is the department of the Spanish government responsible for formulating and implementing national policies on agricultural, livestock, and fishery resources, rural development, and the food industry. First established as an autonomous ministerial entity in 1933 during the Second Spanish Republic, it has played a central role in governing Spain's agrarian economy. A defining milestone in its modern history was guiding the adaptation and modernization of Spanish farming and fisheries into the European Union's Common Agricultural Policy following Spain's accession in 1986.
