What it is

The Cabinet Office is a ministerial department of the Government of the United Kingdom that directly supports the Prime Minister and the Cabinet. Its mandate is to coordinate the development and implementation of government policy across departments, lead the Civil Service, and manage national security and cross-cutting government functions. It was established in December 1916 by Prime Minister David Lloyd George to provide a dedicated secretariat for the newly formed War Cabinet during World War I, with Sir Maurice Hankey serving as its influential first Cabinet Secretary.
