What it is
The Embassy of the United States in Ottawa is the primary diplomatic mission of the United States to Canada, operating under the U.S. Department of State. Its mandate is to represent the President and Government of the United States, advance bilateral economic, trade, and defense cooperation under NORAD and NATO, and deliver consular services to American citizens and visa applicants. Originally established as a diplomatic legation in 1927 following Canada's achievement of independent foreign representation, the mission was elevated to full embassy status in 1943 during World War II and moved into its landmark chancery at 490 Sussex Drive in 1999.
