What it is

Global Affairs Canada is the federal department of the Government of Canada responsible for managing diplomatic relations, advancing international trade, and leading international development assistance. Established in 1909 as the Department of External Affairs under Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier, it initially operated from an office above a barbershop in Ottawa. In 2013, the institution integrated the Canadian International Development Agency to unify diplomacy, commerce, and aid under a single mandate.
