What it is
The Federal Police is Belgium's national police force operating alongside the local police within an integrated, two-tiered law enforcement structure. It is tasked with specialized administrative and judicial policing, managing border and transport security, investigating complex supra-local and organized crime, and providing operational support to local police zones. The institution was established on January 1, 2001, following major police reforms triggered by the Octopus Agreement of 1998, which unified the former Gendarmerie, Judicial Police, and municipal police services.
