What it is
The Federal Public Service Public Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment is a federal ministry of the Kingdom of Belgium responsible for formulating and implementing national policy across healthcare, environmental protection, animal and plant health, and food safety standards. Established by royal decree in 2001 under the first Verhofstadt Government, it was created as part of the nationwide Copernicus Reform to modernize the Belgian civil service by reorganizing departments from the former Ministry of Social Affairs, Public Health and Environment alongside elements of the regionalized Ministry of Agriculture. The restructuring was significantly influenced by major food security crises of the late 1990s, leading to an integrated 'One Health' administrative approach.
