What it is
The Bulgarian Navy is the maritime warfare service branch of the Bulgarian Armed Forces, primarily responsible for defending Bulgaria's Black Sea coastline and maritime sovereignty. Its mandate encompasses maritime territorial defense, mine countermeasures, search and rescue operations, and participation in NATO-led international missions. Established in 1879 in Ruse as the Danube Flotilla, its most famous historical engagement occurred during the First Balkan War in 1912 when the Bulgarian torpedo boat Drazki successfully attacked the Ottoman cruiser Hamidiye.
