What it is
The Constitutional Court of the Republic of Bulgaria (Конституционен съд на Република България) is an independent constitutional judicial authority that ensures the supremacy of the Bulgarian Constitution. Composed of twelve judges elected or appointed in equal quotas by the National Assembly, the President, and the supreme judiciary, its mandate is to review the constitutionality of statutory laws and international treaties, resolve jurisdictional disputes between state organs, and rule on the legality of presidential and parliamentary elections. The Court was established in 1991 under Chapter Eight of the post-communist Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria adopted by the Grand National Assembly, and it held its first constitutional session on October 3, 1991.
