What it is

The Ministry of Transport and Communications is the central government department responsible for national policy across Bulgaria's road, railway, maritime, and aviation sectors, as well as postal and electronic communications infrastructure. Tracing its origins back to 1879 following the country's liberation and the adoption of the Tarnovo Constitution, its portfolio has historically combined public works, transport, and communications in various configurations. In the early 2000s, it briefly expanded into the Ministry of Transport, Information Technology and Communications to steer national digital strategies before reverting to its core transport and communications designation.
