What it is

The President of the Republic of Bulgaria is the head of state and supreme commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, symbolizing the unity of the nation and representing the country in international relations. Operating within a parliamentary republic, the president is directly elected to a five-year term and holds key constitutional prerogatives such as returning legislation for reconsideration, scheduling elections, and appointing caretaker governments during parliamentary crises. The office was established on April 3, 1990, replacing the communist-era State Council, and was consolidated under the 1991 Constitution ahead of the country's first direct presidential election in 1992.
