What it is
The Government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (Gouvernement du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg) is the executive authority of the country, consisting of the Prime Minister and ministers appointed by the Grand Duke. Its constitutional mandate is to conduct state policy, initiate and execute laws passed by the Chamber of Deputies, direct the civil administration, and represent the nation in European Union and international affairs. Established in 1848 with the adoption of Luxembourg's first constitution, the government was originally headed by a President of the Council of Government (with Gaspard-Théodore-Ignace de la Fontaine serving as the inaugural council president) before the formal title of Prime Minister was officially adopted in 1989.
