What it is
The Municipal Council of Esch-sur-Alzette (Conseil communal d'Esch-sur-Alzette) is the locally elected legislative body governing the municipality of Esch-sur-Alzette, the second-largest city in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Composed of 19 directly elected municipal councilors, its mandate is to approve the communal budget and tax rates, regulate local zoning and public works, oversee municipal public services, and elect the executive College of Aldermen (Collège des bourgmestre et échevins). While the town's historical civic autonomy dates to 1328 under John the Blind, the modern municipal council framework took shape when Grand Duke William IV formally re-granted Esch-sur-Alzette city status by decree on May 29, 1906, recognizing its transformation into the industrial capital of Luxembourg's iron-ore "Minett" region.
