What it is
The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra is Malta's national symphonic institution, operating as a state-owned public cultural agency under the Ministry for National Heritage and the Arts. Its mandate is to promote orchestral music, accompany national opera and ballet productions, foster music education, and represent Maltese musical heritage domestically and abroad. It traces its origins to 1968, when musicians from the disbanded British Mediterranean Fleet regrouped to form the Manoel Theatre Orchestra. In 1997, it became the autonomous National Orchestra of Malta, before formally expanding into a full-scale symphonic ensemble and taking its current name in 2008.
