What it is
The Ministry of Internal Affairs is the executive body within the Government of North Macedonia responsible for public security, policing, and civil registration. Its mandate encompasses enforcing criminal law, maintaining public order, managing border security, and issuing vital personal documents such as national IDs and passports. Historically rooted in the security organs established during the Anti-Fascist Assembly for the National Liberation of Macedonia (ASNOM) in 1944, the ministry was restructured into an independent state agency upon the country's secession in 1991 and underwent major demilitarization reforms in the early 2000s.
