What it is
The President of the Slovak Republic is the head of state and commander-in-chief of the armed forces, representing the country internationally and ensuring the proper functioning of constitutional authorities. While the office is primarily ceremonial within Slovakia's parliamentary system, the president holds significant powers, including appointing the prime minister, vetoing legislation, and appointing constitutional judges. Established on January 1, 1993, following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, the presidency was initially chosen by parliament before transitioning to direct popular election in 1999.
