What it is
The Trenčín Self-Governing Region is one of the eight higher territorial units (regions) of Slovakia, serving as a regional public authority responsible for secondary education, regional road infrastructure, social care, healthcare, and cultural facilities. Formed administratively in 1996 and established as a self-governing entity following decentralization reforms under Act No. 302/2001 Coll., it officially began operations on January 1, 2002. The territory encompasses a historic corridor along the Váh River, celebrated for the ancient Roman inscription of Laugaricio dating back to 179 AD and the medieval stronghold of Trenčín Castle.
