Sweden

What it is

The Ministry of Health and Social Affairs (Socialdepartementet) is a cabinet-level ministry of Sweden responsible for policies regarding healthcare, social welfare services, elder care, and social security. Established in 1920 when social affairs were spun off from the Ministry of Civil Affairs, it played a central role throughout the 20th century in creating Sweden's universal welfare state, known as the 'Folkhemmet'. Today, it oversees key national agencies, including the National Board of Health and Welfare and the Swedish Social Insurance Agency.
